Having a few wine tricks up your sleeve is bound to come in handy for those desperate times when you must have wine. As a wine lover, you’d hope to never be put in such a predicament, but things happen.

“Knowing how to creatively uncork a bottle or quickly chill white wine can come in pretty handy in a pinch,” said certified sommelier and director of training and development for Wirtz Beverage Sam Bremer.

Here are three wine hacks that will help you serve wine, even if the circumstances try to prevent it.

KNIFE IT OUT

“A steak knife can work beautifully,” says Bremmer. When all else fails, grab a steak knife, jab it into the cork and try to pull it out that way. “I actually had to do this once in a restaurant when I had a particularly stubborn cork on a 6-liter bottle and a regular cork screw would not get the job done,” he recalls.

GIVE THE BOTTLE A SALTWATER BATH

Have a bottle of wine that hasn’t been chilled and needs to be served? No fear, says Ryan Gaudin, Advanced Sommelier, Court of Master Sommeliers. “Fill up a bucket, or any vessel, with ice and cold water. Add about three tablespoons of salt. There is a chemical reaction between the water and salt that allows it to cool down quicker. “Spin the bottle every minute or so and make sure the entire bottle is submerged. This process should cool a bottle in under 5 minutes.”

USE PORT TONGS

“When you have a really old bottle of port, it can be almost impossible to get the cork out without it crumbling,” Bremer says. “Take port tongs and place them in a fire for 15 minutes or until they are red hot. Hold the tongs around the middle of the bulge on the neck of the port bottle for about 30 seconds to heat up the glass. Then take an ice cube and touch it to the heated neck. The glass should snap and break cleanly and pop off.” The key to success with this is remembering to set the stage for a high-end presentation.
